The 12th Expedition 2020

From February 24 to March 13, 2020 there was an international team of researchers with scientists from Peru, Germany and Switzerland, under the direction of Dr. Kerstin Hartsch / IPROconsult Dresden GmbH, on the way to a field campaign in Nasca and Palpa. Students from the German University TU Clausthal and the Peruvian University Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in Lima supported the campaign.
The aim of the interdisciplinary field campaign is to use various geoscientific methods to record both the state and the changes of the ground drawings - that are threatened with destruction - in order to derive conclusions for the preservation of this world cultural heritage.
In addition to the geochemical-mineralogical investigations of sample material, geophysical field measurements and methods for dating the lines using OSL (optically stimulated luminescence), selected areas were also surveyed with UAV (so-called: drones) to obtain high-resolution multispectral images. The flights were carried out by members of the Grupo de Innovación Tecnológica (GIT) of the Peruvian University PUCP.
Christiane Richter, member of the Nascaproject at the Faculty of Spatial Information at the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Dresden, was responsible for the surveying tasks.

All investigations within the scope of this long-term project serve to develop concepts how this world cultural heritage can be preserved even under the conditions of global climate changes.
The work in the northern part of the Atacama Desert with temperatures up to 40° C was a great challenge for the excursion participants as well as for the measurement technology used.
