The 13th Expedition 2023
An international team of scientists from Peru, Germany, and Switzerland, led by Dr. Kerstin Hartsch/IPROconsult Dresden GmbH, aims to investigate the impact of climate change on the Nasca
soil drawings. In addition to establishing a monitoring system, the aim is to develop concepts for preserving this World Cultural Heritage Site under the conditions of global climate change.
An initial interdisciplinary field campaign took place in 2020. Due to the pandemic and the political situation in Peru, on-site work could not begin and continue until 2023.
During the field campaign, which took place from September 1-17, 2023, geochemical and mineralogical sampling and measurements to date the lines using OSL (Optically Stimulated Luminescence) were conducted. The investigations are being carried out at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, under the direction of PD Dr. Christoph Schmidt.
Another important task of the field campaign was to fly over selected areas using UAVs (drones). Various sensors (LiDAR, thermal, and multispectral cameras) were used for this purpose.
The flights were conducted by members of the Grupo de Innovación Tecnológica (GIT) of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP).
The subsequent analysis will be carried out at the HTW Dresden, Faculty of Geoinformation.
